“In the Steps of our Ancestors”
Through the revitalization of jiimaan canoe technology, protocols, and ceremonies, contemporary Anishinaabe People, and their allies, will retrace the historic migration of our Ancestors, responding to the call of the 7th Fire Prophecy to go back along the trail to pick up what our Ancestors have left for us to find.
ABOUT THE JOURNEY
Beginning in Matane, Quebec, at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, Anishinaabe (Ojibwe/Odawa/Potawatomi) and their allies will paddle up the St Lawrence Seaway, following ancient travel routes throughout the Great Lakes.
We will travel through and be hosted by Tribal Nations along the way, revitalizing our languages, ceremonies, and protocols as we travel the waterways. The journey will be a way to take direct action to call attention to the need for protection of Mother Earth's waterways, for all living beings, while uplifting the next generations of Indigenous leaders. In doing so we will reaffirm the unity of Indigenous Peoples as the first peoples of Turtle Island, who were not responsible for imposing a transcontinental border between our peoples. During this time of great geopolitical unrest, the call for Indigenous unity and solidarity is especially urgent and compelling.
